February Update

Nearly a year since my last post so good to see I’m keeping these updates regular. In all honesty, the past year has been relatively quiet so there hasn’t been all that much to talk about but I do have some exciting things coming up that I wanted to share with you all.

Firstly, on 9th March at 5:30pm, I’ll be playing at the Wigmore Hall as part of Duo Chorinho, a duo with pianist, Sam Watts. The concert is themed around different areas of the world and so we’ve chosen lots of interesting and beautiful pieces of music from different cultures. It should be a great concert and it’s all being produced and promoted by a group of teenagers from Tower Hamlets AND it’s free! So many reasons to come and listen. More info / tickets here.

Then, later in March I’m going to be recording for Maria Chiara Argirò‘s debut album. I’ve been playing with Maria Chiara’s band for a year or so now and it’s been amazing fun, we’ve travelled around a lot, doing concerts in Rome, Florence, Paris and UK, and we’ve made lots of great music so I can’t wait to put it all onto an album. Keep your eyes peeled for the album release later this year.

And finally, some new videos to share with you. This year I joined Misha Mullov-Abbado‘s Group, I’ve loved listening to the band’s music previously and have played a lot with some of the original members, so it’s been a perfect fit coming into the band and playing Misha’s music. We’ve done two gigs so far this year, one in January at the Vortex Jazz Club and one just the other week at the Riverhouse Arts Centre. We’ve got one coming up on 20th March at Omnibus Arts Centre in Clapham, so do come along if you’d like to hear us play. To get an idea of what the band sounds like, you can check out these videos that were recorded at our Vortex gig:

Tata for now and more updates soon.

Hope you enjoy it and we look forward to sharing the rest of the music with you all on 12th March.

Duet

Duet is a short film written and directed by Irina Nedelcu. Writing the soundtrack was an amazing experience for me, not only getting to work with Irina on the script, in which the music was an integral part, but also in allowing me to write more through composed music, rather than the more improvisation-based style of jazz writing I had always previously used. We have just started work on Irina’s next film which will be out later this year.

Here is the finished film, as well as an audio track of the score made into a full length piano piece.

Scott Chapman’s Proscenium

I’m really excited to be a part of Scott Chapman‘s Proscenium, playing clarinet and bass clarinet. Scott recently released some mega videos which were great fun to record and which also feature Nadim Teimoori (sax), Sam James (piano) and Conor Chaplin (bass), as well as Scott (drums) and myself (clarinets), playing Scott’s exciting compositions. Check them out here and take a look at Scott’s website to find out more info about the band, including upcoming gig dates:

– Friday 13th March (not one for the superstitious!) 1pm – Royal Festival Hall Foyer, London
– Sunday 14th June 7pm – Omnibus Arts Centre, Clapham, London

Trio Recordings

Back in August 2013, Matt Robinson (piano), Alex Munk (guitar) and I went into the studio to record a few tracks. We’d been playing together as a trio a lot at that time and were all enjoying exploring the different moods we could create with our instruments and the feeling of playing in a group more akin to a classical chamber ensemble than a traditional jazz trio. At the time, we did a series of concerts in churches, which hugely affected the way we played and choice of tunes.

We recorded 5 short tunes which have mostly kept under the radar until now, so we hope you enjoy listening to them. This trio has since developed into my newest band, Fabled.

Welcome!

Welcome to Sam Rapley Music! Just getting used to this News blog business so got a couple of things that have happened in the past couple of years to catch up on. All to come in following posts and then will be keeping updated regularly so lots to look forward to.
